ORIENTATION — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Orientation? ▾
Orientation is a week-long transitional program that aims to introduce first year students to university life. Upper year students, called Leaders, help facilitate the week, which is a combination of academic programming and exciting events that help first years meet other UC students and get acquainted with the City of Toronto.
I can't afford Orientation but want to attend. What should I do? ▾
At UC, we believe in providing an equitable and accessible Orientation experience for all. If you would like to attend Orientation but cannot afford a ticket, we offer need-based bursaries that can help cover the cost. Students who demonstrate financial need will not be turned away. Normally, financial need must be demonstrated through qualification for federal or provincial student loan funding (e.g. OSAP).
If you think you may qualify for bursary consideration, please do not hesitate to contact us at orientation@uclit.ca and include your student number.
Is there a schedule of activities for the week? ▾
Yes, coming soon!
I'm a student at another College. Can I sign up for UC Orientation? ▾
We strongly encourage students to register for their own College Orientation. Each College Orientation includes traditions and programming that prepare an incoming student to participate in their College, including introductions of academic resources and services, locations of dedicated centers and libraries, and feeling connected with the community at your College.
For this reason, your own College Orientation programming may provide benefits that the UC program cannot replicate.
Can I register for more than one Orientation program at University College? ▾
We do not recommend registering for more than one Orientation program at University College.
Selecting only one Orientation program ensures that students can fully participate in and benefit from all the programming offered.
We encourage students to explore and carefully consider all options to determine which orientation program best suits their needs, more information here.
The only exception is Commuter Orientation. Given that it occurs in July (while other Orientation programs happen in August), you may participate in Commuter Orientation and another Orientation program at University College if you wish.
Is Commuter Orientation a separate event? ▾
Yes, it is. Commuter Orientation is a two-day orientation taking place at the end of July specifically for incoming commuter students.
You can learn more about Commuter Orientation here.
Do I need to live in residence to attend Orientation? ▾
All incoming first-year students registered at University College are eligible to attend UC Orientation, regardless of whether they live on-campus or not.
Where can I register? ▾
Registration is available here.
When does registration open and close? ▾
Registration will open on this site on July 5th at 9:00 AM EDT. Early bird tickets are limited and will be on sale until July 18th or until tickets run out. Regular tickets will be on sale until August 30th.
What does my ticket cover? ▾
Your orientation ticket covers the cost of attendance to all of the events listed on our schedule (August 25th - 31th). Your ticket also covers the cost of an Orientation Kit and 2 Orientation T-shirts. Your kit will include swag from our sponsors, as well as important resources about U of T and the contact info for Orientation team members.
Will meals be provided? ▾
UC Orientation will not be providing meals during Orientation week. This decision has been made in an effort to reduce waste and in an effort to reduce costs for students. You may purchase meals from any food vendor on campus, however we recommend purchasing your meals from the University College Dining Hall. For more information on the dining hall hours and menu click here.
Students who are not living in a University College residence are invited to purchase a meal add-on for $50 when registering for Orientation. Students living in residence have meals covered through their meal plan.
UC Orientation will provide snacks (including granola bars, fruits, and other baked goods) throughout the duration of the week free of charge.
Who is welcome at Orientation? ▾
UC prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive space. We strive to make all incoming students feel welcome and included in Orientation regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, language, financial background and other identifiers.
If you have any concerns about participating in Orientation or worry about your comfort and safety during any events please contact us at orientation@uclit.ca. We are happy to hear them and accommodate you wherever possible.

What can I do if I have accessibility concerns and/or believe that I will face barriers during Orientation? ▾
Accessibility, physically and mentally, is something UC Orientation does our best to accommodate every year. We do our best to make sure events are accessible and comfortable for those with mobility concerns, visual and hearing impairments, and other disabilities of various forms.
We also have designated accessibility Executives in charge of overseeing accessibility through the planning process and acting as contact points for those with accessibility issues through Orientation Week.
If you still have concerns feel free to contact us at orientation@uclit.ca.
Do any events cost additional money? ▾
No! Once you have purchased your Orientation ticket you will not have to pay any additional fees to attend an event. There will be an opportunity to donate to our chosen charity during our charity event on Friday, September 8th. This is completely optional but we appreciate all donations!
What kind of events will there be? Are there academic events and fun events? ▾
UC Orientation consists of fun social events and academic events that best prepare you for your first year at U of T. Social events range from chill low-energy events to exciting larger events involving other U of T colleges.
Although UC Orientation includes academic events, if you are interested in a solely academic focused Orientation experience consider participating in Thrive Orientation. Click here for more information.
What is a House? ▾
University College is made up of three residence buildings, all of which are further divided into fifteen Houses. Students living in residence will live in their house, and each house has one or two residence dons and a common room. During Orientation, many events are divided up by house as you will be competing for the House Cup. Commuters will also be randomly assigned a house and will be with them for the duration of Orientation.
I cannot attend all of Orientation. Can I still participate? Will the price be the same? ▾
Participation in UC Orientation works on a drop-in basis. You may pick and choose which events you would like to attend and which you would prefer to skip. If you decide to attend an event, but find that it isn’t for you, you are free to leave at any point.
Orientation tickets cover the entire week, so the price remains the same for everyone regardless of how many events you attend. Check out our Registration page for more information!

A piece of ID like your TCard or a piece of government ID with the name you registered with.
Do I need to bring anything to participate in Orientation Week events? ▾

What is your hazing and drinking policy? ▾
We have a zero tolerance policy for hazing and provide a dry frosh. No student is expected to participate in any activity that they are not comfortable with.
If you are ever in need of help during the week please reach out to someone from the Orientation leadership team! Each student receives a lanyard with contact information for the Orientation leadership team.
Parents: Can I attend orientation with my child? ▾
Unfortunately, no. While we value the support of parents in this transitional stage, it is integral for students to make connections with each other through Orientation week.
